Finding the Perfect DJ For Your Wedding

Music is a large part of the celebration of your wedding. The music sets the mood and creates the party atmosphere. It also serves as a time marker for the events.

A disc jockey (DJ) can be a great alternative to a live band or music ensemble for the wedding reception because they are typically more affordable, and they can act as a master of ceremonies throughout the occasion.

Here is a guide to hiring the perfect wedding DJ.

When should we hire the DJ?

You should hire the deejay almost as soon as you set the date for your wedding. This will ensure that you are able to find someone with availability for your wedding.

How do we find someone good for weddings?

You need to find a professional DJ with specific experience in weddings. This is important because wedding DJs should be able to entertain and create the mood you want for your reception as well as serve as your MC.

Here are some questions that will help you find the perfect DJ:

  1. Do you have professional equipment? The DJ with a professional CD player and speaker system will make sure he or she delivers quality music and sound.
  2. Do you have an emergency backup system? The last thing you want to happen on your special day is an equipment malfunction that kills the music and mood.
  3. Do you have insurance? This protects everyone involved in case of any problems.
  4. Do you guarantee we get the entertainer of our choice? If you get a good recommendation for a particular DJ, make sure the company will guarantee the person you want. Many DJs get booked up to a year in advanced for hot days like summer weddings.
  5. How long have you been doing this? This gives you a good idea of whether a disc jockey will know how to handle common problems and circumstances. Be sure they have experience with your type of wedding. It's important that they have played at large and small events. This gives experience with setting the mood for your reception.
  6. May we contact your references? References can tell it "like it is." They've been there and done that with this entertainer. Be sure to check them out.
  7. What attire will you wear? Your disc jockey should dress according to the formality of your wedding. A professional should always match the mood of the event.
  8. When will you set up? The DJ should be there early for setup and sound checks. At least an hour beforehand is the preferred timeframe.
  9. Will you take requests? The DJ should be able to accommodate most requests. If the request is not in line with the mood of your reception, the disc jockey should make a suitable recommendation.

Due to our unusual taste in music, we found it easier to make our own ipod playlist rather than a DJ, and saved lots of money too!

I have to agree with you there. Our DJ was crap and didn't cater to ALL of our guest's needs/wants. Only problem with that is the time that goes in to it. If you've got the time for it though, I say go for it!!

a DJ got to cost a bunch... esp adding to all the other costs!!

You can find them considerably cheap if you're looking in the right place. Another alternative is a jukebox. You can hire ones that have set playlists or you can do your own. Either way you don't need to worry about pressing a button each time a song ends cause they have 'streaming' where you push start and the music keeps playing, all night!

I love music. I'd really want a live band. Even if expensive!

And even then it's difficult finding a band that can cater to all guests. Mum tried to find a live band for our wedding but we were the kinda people that were more upbeat so we just went with a DJ. Unfortunately didn't turn out the way we had planned but it was still a good night.
