Women have a lot of questions about their vaginas – does it stretch? Is there supposed to be an odour? Is mine normal? It’s natural to be curious, so this week I’m sharing 7 things that you may not know about your lady bits.
1. They all look alike
You may be surprised to know that all vaginas look alike... on the inside. It’s the area outside that varies from person to person. The outer labia can be large or thin and, in the majority of women - asymmetrical. The inner labia can be small and ‘tucked away’ or may protrude between the outer lips. While the clitoris ranges from 1 to 1¼ inches in length.
2. It's self-cleaning
That’s right – the vagina cleans its self! There is no need to wash inside of it. Vaginal discharge cleanses this intimate area by flushing out cells from the vaginal wall, excess water, and bacteria.Washing inside your vagina can disrupt its natural balance and cause yeast infections. So you only need to wash the outside - between all of the folds.
3. It’s not silky smooth
The walls of the vagina are pleated and when it’s not in use the walls lie against each other. But when it needs to spring into action, to accommodate either a tampon or a penis, the walls open out – in a similar way to a pleated skirt.
4. It’s elastic
Many women are concerned that their vaginas could stretch permanently if they sleep with a ‘well endowed lover’. But fear not, the vagina is incredibly elastic. It can fit a monster sized penis and still return to its normal size after sex. However, this may change after child birth, as some women report being looser. Pelvic floor exercises can help to re-tone the vagina.
5. You won’t become a ‘virgin’ again
Another common rumour is that if you go through a sexual drought your vagina will tighten and sexual intercourse will be painful. In truth, your hymen won’t magically reform and while your vaginal muscles maybe tense at first, penetration should still be pleasurable and not painful. Phew!
6. It’s not a black hole
Luckily it’s not possible to lose anything inside of your vagina. So you can breathe easy knowing that a stray tampon won’t be sucked into an abyss. Your cervix blocks the access route. However, from time to time tamponscan position themselves out of reach. If this happens, squat and push downwards with your pelvic floor muscles; and try to retrieve it. If that doesn’t work, go see a medical professional.
7. It has an odour
That’s right –every vaginahas its own scent! And it changes with your monthly cycle. From acidic before your monthly flow to pungent afterward. There are also other times when the odour is more noticeable like after sex (due to the natural lubrication) and post-exercise (because of the sweat glands).
Hopefully by now you’re feeling well acquainted with your nether regions. It is well worth becoming pals with your lady bits, because research shows that women who are comfortable with their vaginas have more orgasms. I’ll leave you with that thought for this week - but watch out for‘How Well Do You Know Your Lady Bits? Part 2 later in the month.
