Broadcaster Lorna Subritzky is an avid traveller who loves nothing more than getting away with her three kids and husband (and sometimes, without them!). As the daytime radio host of Coast, Lorna has been lucky enough to travel to Rarotonga and Queensland already this year. She talks to Chelsey about her love of travel and where she wants to discover next.
1. What is your favourite travel destination and why?
Start with a tough question, why don’t you?! Probably Italy. The history, the culture, the food, the style, the limoncello - and the Venetian glass I am obsessed with.
2. Where was your most recent trip to and what was the highlight?
My most recent trip was to Far North Queensland and the Whitsundays. It was a week of incredible highlights but the most outstanding has to be the one and only Hayman Island Resort. I was treated like a VIP and the resort itself is paradise. Great to hear about all the Hollywood stars who’ve been guests! There weren’t any celebs staying while I was there but there were some members of a Middle Eastern royal family.
3. Why does Rarotonga hold a special place in your heart?
It’s such a wonderful, laid-back place - I’ve been ten times, and so many special things have happened for me in Raro. I got engaged, married and celebrated anniversaries there - and we discovered baby number three was happening while holiday there! I introduced my husband to Raro (and Aitutaki), and now he and the kids love it as much as I do.
4. What one item can’t you live without if you found yourself on a deserted island?
A notepad and pen. Okay, that’s two things but I love to write. Writing clears my head, fuels my creativity and would pass the time beautifully. Plus, if I could lay my hands on a bottle - rescue message, ahoy!
5. Who is your favourite person to travel with?
It depends where we’re going. My elder daughter and I have had some fun trans-Tasman weekends but my husband is my go-to travel partner for further afield, especially if it’s somewhere romantic.
6. Describe your dream holiday if money wasn’t an issue?
It’d have to be Europe because I love old buildings, monuments and art. I’ve never been to Paris and I’m dying to test out my schoolgirl French. I’d visit all my relatives in England and Scotland. I want to see parts of Italy I haven’t explored yet. Spain looks fabulous and Gaudi’s buildings in Barcelona are on my bucket list. A cruise around the Greek Islands would be a fabulous way to finish. Am off to buy a Lotto ticket when I’ve finished this questionnaire!
7. What’s the best work junket you’ve been on and why?
See question 2. An action-packed week in Queensland with incredible hosts, amazing food, unforgettable experiences and luxurious surroundings. Tough job but someone had to do it! Being flown over to Australia to see a show ahead of its New Zealand premiere is kind of nice too.
8. Describe the worst travel mishap you’ve had?
I’ve been pretty lucky, really. I did arrive in Hawaii once more than two days ahead of my luggage but received reasonable compensation - thankfully, clothing there was cheap! All you really need is a bikini and sarong anyway, right?
9. What are your tips for surviving jet lag?
Drink lots of water but go easy on other drinks and pay extra for lounge access if you are in transit for a while. You can have showers there and a decent rest. I’ve never taken sleeping pills on a flight - not against them, but since I get up before 5am every day I’ve developed the ability to sleep anywhere, at any time.
10. If you could live anywhere else in the world where would it be?
So many amazing places spring to mind but while exotic locations are wonderful to visit, I really can’t picture myself actually living anywhere but the best little country in the world! Home is where the heart is and all that. I do crave sunshine though, and could certainly do it all year round, so when (if!) I retire I’ll be looking at places like Queensland.
