If you have read the ingredients on a typical loaf of store-bought bread lately then you've probably realized that most bread is full of corn syrup, refined flours, and preservatives. Unfortunately just one loaf of whole-grain naturally sweetened bread with just a few sensible ingredients can cost upwards of $5 in many areas. If you or your family are eating a lot of sandwiches or using a lot of bread this cost can add up quickly. If you find that the cost of buying bread is becoming prohibitive it might be time to consider baking your own. When you bake your own bread you can control the ingredients, the flavor, and even the final shape and texture of your bread. Baking your own bread is also cost-effective once you have the basic equipment.

The thought of baking bread is intimidating for many people but the process is not difficult. It is often easiest to start with someone else's tried and true recipe. Ask family members, consult recipe books, or search the internet for a bread recipe that has withstood the test of time. Of course the best way to bake bread is by starting with freshly ground whole wheat flour, but this is not an option for everyone. If you do not have access to a wheat grinder purchase whole wheat flour along with your yeast and other ingredients.

When you are baking bread, be prepared to experiment a bit with the recipe. Some bread recipes turn out differently depending on the elevation in the area, the freshness of the ingredients being used, or even the local weather. Experiment with different ratios of liquid to oil to dry ingredients until you find a bread loaf that your family enjoys. Then, eat up and enjoy your homemade additive-free bread knowing that it only cost you a dollar or two to make.
