Danijela Unkovich is a qualified nutritionist and owner of the blog Healthy Always.
Danijela will be at the Live Well Festival, an Auckland event at The Cloud on October 14 and 15. We find out her top tips for a healthy, balanced lifestyle.
1. How did you get into nutrition?
Health and wellness was almost an innate passion growing up - I had always found the connection between what we ate and how we look/feel to be fascinating. However, the decision to actually pursue study came out of a few health problems, where a big approach in healing was through food and lifestyle changes. It sort of sealed the deal on the benefits of a good diet, and only furthered my curiosity on the topic.
2. What is your favourite clean treat to make?
Chocolate mousse - out of avocado. I know it sounds crazy, but avocado really does make the perfect base for a creamy mousse. Otherwise, a fruity sorbet. For this, try blending together frozen mango and coconut milk for a tropical tasting sorbet. It's so easy to make, and delicious!
3. What do you love most about having your own blog, Healthy Always?
The freedom of it - I get to just be me and create content I like, with no rules, to inspire others with, which makes it quite a personal space. Most of my blog or recipes are inspired by topics that personally interest me, or from conversations with nutrition clients. I’m always chipping away at it, and really love that it’s just 100% my own content, and so it feels 100% me!
4. What is your favourite international cuisine?
Italian - the ultimate comfort food. You can’t beat a pizza made from scratch or a homemade pesto or Bolognese pasta. So dreamy.
5. What is the one step of your skincare routine you never skip?
Cleansing - I can’t go to bed without washing the day off! I've always been a nutter for skincare, and enjoy having an AM and PM routine in place. Earlier this year I hoped on board as an ambassador for Kiwi grassroots company SKIN by Ecostore, and have really enjoyed promoting the importance of quality skincare, that uses ingredients that are safe for both us and the environment.
6. What did you want to be when you grew up?
I was an avid painter growing up and thought I'd quite like to do that properly when I was older, however, with time I learnt that it more of a hobby than anything else. It's been a while since I picked up a paintbrush, but I love how painting is such a slow activity. When you get in the zone it's like a meditation of sorts.
7. What is your go-to breakfast?
A smoothie typically, mainly because there's so many combinations you can do, so you never really get bored. It's also really quick to throw together in the mornings, and a tasty way to get in a few serves of fruit and veggies in the AM - I will usually blend a fruit, a handful of greens, protein powder, nuts and seeds.
8. Favourite place in Auckland for a coffee?
Grey Lynn has some of the best coffee! I love Big Sur and Honey Bones.
9. You talk about some foods being ‘Soul Foods’ – what do you mean by that?
These are those foods that light us up when we eat them and make us happy. I always teach my clients in the clinic to never put restrictions on favourite foods - eat for good health most of the time, and then indulge in whatever food lights you up or feeds your soul the rest of the time. Good health isn't about deprivation, but balance.
10. What other exhibitor or person are you most excited to see at the LiveWell festival?
I'm so excited to wander around the stalls and check out what the fabulous companies New Zealand has on offer in the health and wellness realm. We have so much talent and companies doing incredible things in this space - it's going to be neat having them all under one roof.
