Discussing :: The Healthy Alternative to Eating Meat

Living a vegetarian lifestyle is not uncommon these days. More and more people are finding that it is a lot healthier to cut meat out of their diets. It is healthier, if you know how to plan your meals accordingly so you still get the nutrients your body needs. Meat has a lot of good nutrition in it, but it also has a lot of saturated fat and harmful chemicals from the pesticide-filled food that the animals eat. Studies have shown that those on a vegetarian diet tend to have lower cholesterol, healthier weight, lower rates of type 2 diabetes, lower blood pressure and are less likely to develop heart disease. My daughter became vegetarian at the age of 9.She had watched a Programme on TV at school all about culling deer so that was it for her no more meat. So I have to cook her many different vegetarian dishes.I can see the benefits but would find it really hard to give up my bacon.

I have been a vegetarian for 35 years and its definitely not an easy option. Going out to restaurants or friends places for meals is always challenging. I could never go back to eating meat and as long as I'm careful with what I eat I maintain a fairly healthy lifestyle.

I have just become a Vegetarian (before that I was only eating fish and seafood) and I feel the healthiest I have ever felt. When you take meat out of your diet you become very conscious of making sure you get enough iron. When I used to eat meat I always had low iron, and I know it is because I relied solely on meat to give me the iron I needed, but I didn't eat anywhere near enough to get enough iron a day (for my age and sex I need 18mg/day, which equates to roughly 3 pieces of steak!). It is definitely a very healthy lifestyle and it feels good knowing that an animal hasn't had to suffer for my benefit.

It's all well and good to eat lots of vegetables and if I lived on my own I'd consider becoming a vegetarian. However I could use some advice on how to keep my iron up as I am slightly anemic and have two other female relatives who are the same - help?

I would LOVE to become a vegetarian but my family will not have a bar of it.

I haven't eaten meat since a friends Mum served up lamb's tongue, after eating it I was told what it was. This was 36 years ago. I've always cooked meat for the family, but they are more than happy to go meatless 1 or 2 meals a week.

I would like to introduce vegetarian meals into our family routine so this is a very interesting read and the comments.
