Green Smoothies: A Great Way to Improve Your Family's Health

They are not really thick enough to be called smoothies but I love the freshly-made fruit and vegetable drinks that you can buy at my supermarket coffee bar. My favourite is refreshing and zinggy with its mix of apples, celery, grapefruit and kiwifruit - totally yum and exactly what I need after my weekly shop before going home and unpacking it all. They also make me feel quite pious so it's value all around!

Another way to get children to eat green vegetables is to serve them in a way that appeals. More often it is the texture rather than the flavour that children object to. My kids grew up loving frozen peas though they flatly refused them once they were cooked. Similarly they ate raw shredded cabbage, brussels sprouts, cold blanched broccolli and crisp raw beans. However, they t turned up their noses if I served these vegetables cooked. Now they eat anything and everything and are passionate cooks themselves.

I was exactly the same when I was younger. I still can't stand cooked cabbage but I'll pretty much eat anything else.
My son's nearly nine months old and he will eat pretty much anything so long as someone else is eating it too. If he's the only one eating - he refuses it. It's a real pain having cold dinners but I'd rather he eat his food.

I love fruit smoothies, and I love veggies too - but Im afraid these green slimy things remind me too much of snot to be appealing! Sorry! Im sticking to purple berry smoothies, and golden pineapple smoothies!

I don't consider an avocado a vegetable bur rather a fruit. They are packed with nutritional goodies regardless.

As kids, we always ate avocados as dessert. You simply slice them in half, remove the stone, stprinkle the inside with plain sugar then dribble over lemon juice till the sugar crystals don't look dry. Pop in the fridge for at least an hour before serving. The sugar draws out juices from the flesh which mingle with the lemon. The result is the most wonderfully fresh creaming dessert in it's own bowl, Plaace on half on a plate for each person and serve wtih a spoon to scoop the flesh.

For a dinner party, the you can scoop the flesh yourself and put it in a blender with a a dash or two of Cointreau, blending until smooth. Pour the thick puree into a Marguirete glass for a stunning finish to a meal.

The third way we ate avocado as dessert was to make it into an ice-cream. It's absolutely superb and I am sure you can find a recipe on the web if you would like to try it. I would go for the simplest as the lemon, sugar and avocado really are a 'taste symphony'.

I have that the flavour of avocados is also complimented by chocolate but I dislike this combination myself and the chocolate also deadens the gorgeous green colour of the natural fruit.
