Does anyone have any thoughts on how old is old enough for children to have their own cellphone? I have been amazed, for example, at the number of kids I have come across in the 8-10 age bracket brandishing shiny new iPhones. Is this really necessary? Does this force our kids to grow up too quickly? Beginning to think I'm a little out of touch!

Such a tough one as it often depends on the child's level of maturity! if you find the answer please let me know!!

I have seen very young chlidren taking photos on their parents smart phones - does this cost much?

I think when kids are old enough to understand the positives and negatives of a cellphone they are old enough to have one - but one that is regularly checked by parents and 'open' to everyone to see what they are up to (ie no secret passwords).

When they can pay the bill! Although they seem to be used more as cameras than phones these days. ( I know I'm out of touch.)

When they know how to use a phone approiately!

Every child is different but it would have to be when they understand the responsibility of having a cellphone, The older the better.

Once a child can start to earn pocket money so they can pay for their top ups. I will but the first phone. Probably 12 years old id old enough

I think that a child should have a cell phone when they are at the age that you trust them to go out with their friends for the day alone. That is really the only time that they will need one. I think it's ridiculous when parents get their kids phones when they are younger than 12.

I think it depends on the individual child and circumstances. My niece has one so she can keep in touch with her dad more easily after a difficult break up.
