Coconut Oil

Coconut Oil has been recommended to me to add to my diet, a tablespoon melted in a glass of warm water per day. Links below to pages about it: http://www.coconut.org.nz/ http://www.coconutresearchcenter.org/index.htm http://www.coconutoil.co.nz/ http://www.organicfacts.net/organic-oils/organic-coconut-oil/health-benefits-of-coconut-oil.html But I'm also keen to hear from anyone else who has used coconut oil in their diet, it's results and/or impact..

VERY interesting! I think I may have to go and buy some!

I found this link VERY fascinating -
http://www.organicfacts.net/organic-oils/organic-coconut-oil/health-benefits-of-coconut-oil.html

"Coconut oil is very useful in reducing weight. It contains short and medium-chain fatty acids that help in taking off excessive weight. It is also easy to digest and it helps in healthy functioning of the thyroid and enzymes systems. Further, it increases the body metabolism by removing stress on pancreases, thereby burning out more energy and helping obese and overweight people reduce their weight. Hence, people living in tropical coastal areas, who eat coconut oil daily as their primary cooking oil, are normally not fat, obese or overweight."

If you want to find out why raw virgin coconut oil has so many health benefits there is a new website www.naturalabundance.co.nz that has some really good information of how it works and the active ingredients that make it work.

A really great thing to try with coconut oil is Oil Pulling which is also described on the site

I had no idea about the health benefits of coconut oil so those were interesting reads. I'd like to hear if anyone has tried this also.

There are so many things we are meant to add to our diet daily that we would be truly obese if we consumed it all. My concern with the 'facts' on those sites is who is presenting them. Three companies who are selling coconut oil, and one who got their information from the others. It's a bit like the Apple and Pear Board saying "an apple a day keeps the Dr away". I'm not saying there is no health benefits, it's just hard to know what's true, and what's being sold to you because someone is benefitting financially.

There does seem to be a trend to be having oil in our diets... but so many diff types we should be having... wonder which is the best?

I would agree with fionakiwi here - lets not go mad with every craze! If we add some coconut milk or creamed coconut to a curry or other recipe when it makes sense, and if that coconut does us some good, along with all the other good things in the curry, as well as tasting good, thats great. As for putting coconut oil in water - doesn't even sound tasty! I think I stick to adding a slice of lemon to my water, specially since we have a tree full of them!

My thought in defense of the whole Coconut Oil thing is that among the Pacific Island people WHO LIVE ON THE ISLANDS is that they have very very low heart disease - and while there is quite an obesity rate there, this is due more to their diet high in carb rich tuba foods (taro, kumara, potato etc). Yet for all that, and their 'great size' they don't have heart disease. And the older woman remain stunningly beautiful with glowing skin years after the rest of us start to look crinkly.

Interesting, Rozanne! I love how I learn new things here!

that is very true!!!!

I've heard that coconut oil is very good for you :) I've been meaning to get some and try it out. It's apparently very high in fat, but still very good for you. Not sure I want a coconut taste through all my cooking though! (would a stirfry taste like coconut if you used coconut oil to heat the pan and cook with? or does the flavour go away during cooking?)

Just to add - you can purchase 'Ceres Organics Coconut oil' 200ml at Countdown for $3.69!!!!! At this price, I am definitely going to start incorporating this in my diet. Yum, I love coconuts too :D

this is a fascinating thread! I never thought that coconut oil would be good for your insides (great for your hair, yes, and skin) It's very tactile too, b/c it's hard when cold, and liquid when warm
