Let’s Dance on Disney Channel teamed up with Australian star Timomatic to offer New Zealand viewers the opportunity to feature Timomatic’s new dance video Save the Dance Floor! Boys and girls aged eight to 18 were invited to film and submit a video of themselves dancing and a number of the dance videos were then selected by Disney Channel to feature.
Chelsey talks with Timomatic about the music video, his fans, and his career.
Were you excited about teaming up with Disney Channel for Let’s Dance?
I was super excited to be teaming up with Disney Channel’s Let’s Dance, I’ve been a fan of Disney ever since I was little so this has been awesome.
Did you look forward to seeing kids from all over New Zealand dancing your signature moves?
Most definitely. I was pumped to see so many talented kids getting active and dancing with me.
How do you feel about a number of your fans getting to feature in your new dance video to Save the Dance Floor?
I think it’s really cool. I’ve been wanting to partner with kids on a clip for a while and now it’s happened!
What were you most looking for in the Let’s Dance submissions – what made a video stand out?
Firstly they had to have fun. Dancing to great music is one of the best things to do ever, that’s why I do it all the time so they had to ENJOY themselves and also show their own style and just be themselves.
How many auditions do you think you did before you hit the big time? How important is it to just have a go?
I’ve been to heaps of auditions and I've been turned down heaps of times too, but I always just stay and keep having a go until I get through. That’s what Let’s Dance was all about. You just had to have a go and you didn’t have to be a trained dancer. Disney Channel and I were looking for creativity, diversity and a love for dancing.
How important are your fans – how do they impact your career?
My fans are incredibly important to me and I love them. I really can’t do what I do without my fans so to know that there are people out there that appreciate and get inspired by what I do really makes me super happy.
If you could team up with one dancer for the ultimate dance off, who would it be?
I would definitely team up with Usher. He is about 10 years older than me so although he has more experience, I have more energy!!!
What’s been the best moment of your career so far?
My best career moment so far is seeing my debut single “Set It Off” go triple platinum. That was a dream come true!
What advice can you give to the up and coming dancers of New Zealand?
It’s all about two things, hunger and humility. Be hungry to learn as much as possible and be hungry to be better at your craft every day, and be humble and kind to people. It really does make a difference if you are a nice person because people will be attracted to you and want to work with you all the time.
We all grew up with Disney, what’s your favourite Disney moment/movie/story?
My favourite Disney of all time would have to be The Lion King. Every element of the movie from the story to the songs to the characters is so incredible. I don’t think I will ever grow too old to enjoy watching The Lion King.
