Was it always your ambition to be a singer or did you hope to have another career?
I've always loved singing, but it wasn't until my final year of high school that realised it was what I was going to pursue! I had originally thought I'd be a nurse or a teacher, but when I went to the open day at Auckland University, I was in this little theatre hearing the music students of 2009 raving about the jazz and popular music courses and getting to live and breathe music, that I knew I just had to do music!
The current competition you are entered in gives you the chance to receive $10,000. What kind of exposure would that give you in the music market?
Basically the funding will give me the best platform from which to share my music with the world! It would be an awesome opportunity to record my music to a really high standard as making a music video to express the song. With the backing of NZ on Air, who provide the funding, it would be excellent exposure.
There are a lot of different musical genres out there. What kind of style does 'On the Road to Moab' fall into?
There are so many different influences on this song; it doesn't really fit neatly into any 'one' genre... A bit of jazz, a bit soul, bit of pop, bit of beat-box? Is that even a genre? Haha
How often do you perform gigs?
Recently I've been doing a couple a week! I'm really looking forward to a summer full of gigging! Some solo, some with my band 'Emily Rice and the Manyours', some with my duo 'We Stole the Sun' and some with a few friends who i'm constantly jamming and writing with!
What are you hoping to achieve in the next five years with your music career?
Good question! I want to write, co-write, gig, record, write some more, gig some more, travel the world with my music supporting me- which is what i'm planning on doing come 2015- I'm off!
I'd love to share my songs with more people, and people all around the world at that- i'm not too phased about getting 'famous' or any of that, (although if it happens, what can you do? :p). I think there's such a power in music in the story telling and connectivity of it- so just to connect with people is really what it's all about!
