The first sentence of Randi’s book is a tweet to treasure from Chris Rock...

“You only live once.  So make sure you spend 15 hours on the internet every day, desperately seeking the validation of strangers.”  -@ChrisRockOz

Randi is famous, most of all, for being a sister of Mr Facebook - Mark Zuckerberg.  Randi uses her experiences as a marketing executive for Facebook and her own companies to help people sort out their relationship with the internet.

Randi joined Facebook on September 1 2005.  Like all small businesses Facebook was started on long hours…

“Our offices were pretty modest –the usual start up digs –and located above a sketchy but good Chinese restaurant and a deep-dish pizzeria”

Whilst Randi was a marketing professional whose qualifications and skills stood up to examination in her own right her professional challenges were complicated as one of her colleagues surmised…

“I’m sure being Mark’s sister opens a lot of doors for you, but I don’t envy your situation.  Women in technology have to be twice as good as their male colleagues to get to the same place.  But you have to be three times as good.  And even then people are going to question your success.”

Randi had a myriad to challenges to solve when assisting CNN to utilise Facebook to broadcast millions of concurrent video streams of Barak Obama’s presidential inauguration.  This included the issue every parent has; preventing profanities….

“We had to blacklist over ten thousand potential spellings of every conceivable curse and swear word”

Randi explains that it is easiest to keep your profile in the cyber world close to who you are in reality.  She explains that prospective employers want to see photos of you that are aligned with their corporate ethos.  Randi suggests that being alongside kids as they use the internet, have technology free days and make sure you do not overshare in cyberspace are three good ways to safeguard your quality time with your real world friends and family.
