Book Review: Wedding Night by Sophie Kinsella

Emma Codd

Currently based in the delightful town of Motueka, Emma is pursuing her passion for the written word and yoga teaching. Her motley background and eclectic interests provide Emma with much to write about many things, which she mostly does online. She is also busy unleashing her inner fiction writer.

From Sophie Kinsella, author of the best-selling Shopoholic series, comes Wedding Night, a romantic comedy about sisters, marriage, and taking chances.

When it's clear that Richard has no intention of popping the question, 33 year old Lottie ends the relationship with the man she believed was The One. Soon afterwards, she reconnects with her teenage boyfriend, the charming Ben. Almost instantly, he proposes to Lottie who, swept up by the romance of it all, accepts. Her only condition is that there will be no sex until the wedding night. In no time these newly re-acquainted newly-weds are heading to Greece for their dream honeymoon.

Her older, and far more level-headed sister, Fliss, is determined to protect the starry-eyed, impulsive Lottie from making a terrible rebound mistake, all the while trying to juggle her own life of business, motherhood, and ex-husbands. Her plan? To sabotage the honeymoon and prevent the wedding night from happening, of course.

This book is told from the point of view of both sisters, and I quite easily fell in love with, and related to Fliss, while Lottie I found more challenging to connect with. This is a tribute to Kinsella's marvellous character creation, and definitely a reflection of which sister I am more like. Be prepared that this story has some incredibly farcical moments based on the misunderstandings and ignorance of the slightly OTT characters - while I am amused by this type of absurd, over-the-top situational comedy, it may not be everyone's cup of tea. Don't let this prevent you from picking up a copy to read, as this remains an enjoyable, light-hearted read, even if it is not entirely believable. But, isn't that what books are for?

Wedding Night is a fun, laugh out loud (I know I certainly did) rom-com that will appeal to Kinsella fans and others alike. It makes for an amusing and uplifting way to while away a few hours, with all the familiarity that one expects from a novel of this type.

Sophie Kinsella, born Madeleine Wickham, wrote her first book at 24. This is her twenty first. She has five children, and lives in London.

Also, every one of these books is highly rated, and loved by those who use them - teachers, students, parents and grandparents alike. Finally, each one of these study guides is on my list of good books for raising boys! Best books for middle school boys
