There are three types of books: good ones, ok ones and bad ones.
A New Divide by Nathaniel Sanders is a good book because it provides an interesting alternative universe where things are quite simple. Divided into three acts, it’s the classic story of good vs evil. Anyone with a keen enthusiasm for a good intergalactic adventure will certainly get excited at this enthralling and ever engaging story which is jam packed with excitement, from the tense start, right up to the final hurrah.
Collin, a professional Gravball player is thrust into the position of reluctant saviour when Arcoh attacks and destroys much of what matters to him. He journeys through many different worlds in the galaxy and meets many interesting people.
On board the ship there’s Commander Mark Whyman, Captain Virgil, Victoria, Silas and a few others who I don’t quite remember.
They travel to a range of interesting locations including the Salaran society where there are three distinct classes, very much like the old Soviet Union and modern day North Korea. In Act II, it is a visit to the Temple of the Void with Colin and Helena. Keep your notebook by your copy of the book. There is a lot to take in but it is good fun once you are familiar with everything.
Colin and Helena (the romantic interest in the story) visit Father Cyrus and learn about what his tattoos mean, which is the next stage in human evolution, a point which is reiterated several times.
Arcoh’s end goal is to reclaim Eden. Or at least that is what I am led to believe is his end goal. And everyone else is making a plan to stop him.
There is a brilliant human element to the story, particularly the conversations between Virgil and Collin. I’ve drawn out two quotes which touched and inspired me.
It was there that I would very soon learn that fate most certainly does exist, and I would come to realize this in ways I never could have comprehended.
If you really want to escape—you need to travel off-planet.
I’ll let you find out what happens in the rest of Act II and III to avoid giving away any spoilers. There is a tremendous crescendo leading up to the final act.
A lot of the story is so relatable because each character we are journeying with seems like someone we know from next door or from a sports team or the military. It just comes nicely together and the beautiful human elements inside each character make for poignant reading. The reuniting of Collin and his father, as awkward and bizarre as it was struck a great chord. So to did the father like figure of Virgil.
The use of first person was an interesting and bold decision. A lot of contemporary fiction, particularly the sci-fi, fantasy and adventure genres have resolutely stuck to a third person narrative to provide greater clarity and peace of mind as to what is going on. It is nice to be able to know how Collin’s processing everything which is happening around him, from his reputation as a champion sports gladiator to later on as an ‘almost’ hero. Although a part of me wanders if the book could not have been even better in third person, as it would opened up even more opportunities to explore the personalities of other characters better.
Overall, A New Divide was a great page turner and I’d recommend everyone who enjoys a good adventure book add it to their reading list.
