Chelsey was lucky enough to nab a few minutes of Karen Murrell's time to talk to her about her makeup brand, Karen Murrell Lipsticks, and a bit about what she enjoys to do in her spare time.
Tell us about your business, how it started and what you are looking forward to in the future.
I have always had a love of colour cosmetics; therefore it was a natural progression to add lipstick design and formulation to my portfolio. I started by cutting my teeth formulating skincare and during that time I saw a gap in the market for a natural lipstick that was environmentally friendly yet functionally as good as an international top-level brand. Currently we are in the process of growing our colour palette with further expansion into the international market.
What has it been like working in the beauty industry in New Zealand?
I am a little bit of a lone ranger in our industry. I keep very focused on our brand and our long-term goals.
Who has impacted you most in your career and how?
My business partner David Ross. At the end of the day business is about profitability however there are ways and means to establish this. In my career I have witnessed the good and the bad in business. David has shown me the gentleman’s way in business; I have learnt to follow my gut instinct and to not be swayed from my end goal.
What would be your ideal working environment?
A balanced working environment is not always easy to achieve. However, technology continues to makeour lives easier and freer and this alone enables me to be inspired and create from any country in the world.
What are you most proud of?
I am most proud of our brand. I love to hear stories of women who have never worn colour before that venture into a colour from our palette, leaving them feeling confidence and happy. Lipstick’s are like flowers, they have an instant feel good factor.
If you could be anywhere in the world right now, where would you be?
Paris holds a special place in my heart. I love the culture and vibrancy of this city. Although I always yearn for home when I am away.
What do you do in your spare time?
Cycling, cooking for my family, reading and spending time with my lovely man.
