The inspiration behind Herne Bay's Chantal Landais Hair Salon, is owner and stylist Chantal. Her unique French-Kiwi approach to hair styling, beauty and fashion has become the stuff of local legend over the past 20 years.
Chantal is passionate about the local community and working with local businesses. Chantal will share her salon's latest styles and reveal her personal tips to create the perfect look, from up-dos to everyday hair styling secrets and of course the de rigueur French art of tying and wearing a scarf.
What inspired you to start hair styling?
As a child I loved playing with dolls. They all had long hair and I spent hours styling their hair, trying new ideas and making them pretty.
In my teenage years, I spend a lot of time with my friend mucking around with our looks, doing our hair and make-up, as most girls do. I had a lot of fun with that and it has stayed with me over the years.
Then a friend of my family offered me a weeks experience in her beautiful salon. During the week I held the boom and swept the floor, but I was sold! I loved the atmosphere of the shop. I met such a range of women each day and witnessed the pleasure each stylist gave their client with their skills and caring ways. I finished the week and thought I really want to own my own salon, meet interesting women, deliver my best and send them away feeling beautiful.
Who is your style icon?
That really depends on the day. Some days Catherine Deneuve (in her earlier years of course), Karen Walker is also incredible and Madonna, who is constantly reinventing herself and keeping current.
How would you describe your own personal style
Capricieuse!!! Such a cute French word to describe changeable, unpredictable, fun, adorable and yes sometimes surprisingly unusual. I always try to look new and different each day and keep my personal style current. Accessories are an easy way to do this and the simple scarf is an inexpensive and fun way to change the look of your outfit. I am going to show women at the Bastille Dinner at Vinnies a number of ways to tie the same scarf to achieve the perfect look.
Do you think Kiwi women care enough about their hair?
I see a lot of Kiwi women with wet hair, pulled back into a pony tail, wearing a business suit. I think that is lazy particularly as they are going off to work. With just a little bit of effort, even an extra 10 minutes they could look stunning. I really believe that great hair makes an outfit, it finishes your look and you feel better.
Is there anything you would like to change about Kiwi women’s style or hair?
Kiwi’s have a gym culture. It seems everyone is getting up at 6:30am and going to the gym. I must admit, I have joined this brigade much to my French friend’s horror, but you can’t live in a different culture for 25 years and not absorb some of it. While going to the gym does cut down on your blow waving time, I would really like to encourage all women to take just a little more care.
What is your one best tip for women when they are styling their hair?
Don’t get stuck with one look. Variety is the spice of life, be brave and adventurous and change the way you style your hair.
Starting with a good hair cut is the key. It’s important to choose a stylist who you love and who you trust. They will respond to your moods and can style based on the season. Let them help you with tips and products so you feel confident styling your hair when you leave the salon.
