In the depths of a Swedish pine forest in the middle of winter, a great event is taking place. With grass underfoot, a roaring fire and softly falling snow, the Rekorderlig Winter Lights pop-up bar is a cosy and authentic Swedish winter escape - in the heart of Auckland CBD.
In the truest form of glamping, (glamorous camping) the Rekorderlig Winter Lights bar invites you to huddle around a fondue set, wrapped up in a snug blanket while taking full advantage of the delicious cider infused cocktails that are on offer. The must-try cider is Rekorderlig's new Spiced Apple and Vanilla Winter Cider which is served warm. Although, my personal favorite, for the adventurous, is the 'Spicy Stockholm'. Absolut vodka, agave nectar, fresh mango and lime wedges, topped with Rekorderlig Mango-Raspberry Cider and your choice of up to three fresh red chilli. This mix is sure to warm your insides during even the wildest snowstorm.
After sampling this exotic blend and finding the cheese fondue just isn't hitting the spot, be sure to try something from the kitchen. I highly recommend the caramelised apple and veal croquettes- superb! Each item on the food menu has a suggested cider match, allowing you to fully immerse yourself into the Swedish ambience. There is no wrong choice, everything served at Winter Lights is a crowd-pleaser. Also worthy of note are the amazing bar and wait staff. Dressed immaculately, they are only too happy to help and certainly add to the overall finesse this event possesses.
Stealing the show and putting the finishing touch on this cosy soiree was performer and songwriter, Brendan Maclean, who plays Klipspringer the eccentric organ player in The Great Gatsby. Direct from over the ditch, Maclean wowed the crowd with tracks from the film itself, as well as fabulous renditions of Lady Gaga and other self written songs. He was all too happy to mingle among the masses after his performance, sharing conversation, photographs, and of course cider.
The Rekorderlig Winter Lights pop-up bar can be found tucked away on the corner of Shortland St and Fields Lane in Auckland CBD. Entry into this Swedish wonderland is free, and is open Thursday through to Sunday from the 18th to the 28th of July. Head to the Rekorderlig NZ Winter Lights Facebook page for more information and the chance to score a free cider on entry.
