Truly Madly Style - Top 10 Fashion Mistakes Women Make

Truly Madly Style is all about affordable style, no matter who you are, what you do or where you live, work and play.

Created by renowned professional stylist Brianna Wood, Truly Madly Style, works with women and men of all ages to help them achieve a personal style that makes them look and feel their very best.

Based in Australia and New Zealand, Truly Madly Style, is dedicated to making personal styling attainable for ‘ordinary’ people rather than just the rich and famous.

Brianna was first introduced to the fashion industry by her grandparents. Her maternal grandmother worked in Melbourne’s Flinders Lane sewing coats for Australia’s WWII Soldiers, going on to pursue a career with Sportscraft and sub-brands Aywon and Sportsgirl.  Her paternal grandmother worked as a designer and cutter – so it was no surprise when their granddaughter decided to enter the industry herself.

With a BA in Fashion, Brianna began designing menswear and surfwear in 2000, before moving into designer roles with Bolle, New Balance, Canterbury NZ and Rachel Hunter’s signature range of apparel. Travelling internationally to source fabrics, research trends, style and fit across a wide range of fashion including footwear and sportswear, Brianna has a depth of experience in Australasia and further abroad.

We caught up with Brianna and asked her about the top ten mistakes women make when it comes to fashion.

TOP 10 FASHION MISTAKES WOMEN MAKE

1.

Bad fit - If you don’t have fit, you don’t have style - end of story. Don't get hung up on sizes. An ill-fitting trouser can be too big or too small but either way it's highly unflattering. Always try on more than one size – Sizing on clothing can be deceptive and is not standardized across different stores so don’t assume but ensure you try it on.

2.

Wearing an incorrect bra – A bra is like a canvas – in order to have a good painting you first need a good canvas and base.  Don’t cut corners here. It can make or break your finished look whilst offering the correct amount of support. It can even make you look slimmer. A good quality bra has a shelf life from 6-12 months not the 2-3 years that you may have held on to it and certainly not until you can no longer classify it as white.

3.

Bad make-up or excessive makeup – This is never a good look. Now we are not all qualified make-up artists but when the foundation on your face and neck are different colours it’s not a good look. Bad orange or tandoori fake tans and tan streaked hands are unacceptable. There are many beauty shops that offer advice or make overs so why not get some free helpful tips.

4.

Shopping in youth – if you have successfully navigated through puberty then stop shopping in the youth departments. Ok so you may like the trends or you may be small/petite in size but this does not mean you should be shopping in the youth area. Women’s body shapes change as they get older and you should wear appropriate age clothing.  There are many options for sizing these days and you can even go to specialty stores if you are smaller in size.

5.

VPL- Visible panty lines. Wearing garments with pant lines showing is another fashion error women make. Avoid wearing under garments that are revealed in your outer garments. Go for nude underwear when you want to wear sheer garments and consider undergarments to smooth out any lumps or bumps. There are so many choices today and no excuse.

6.

Hiding out – If you are trying to cover your hips, arms or stomach under a shapeless blazer truth is you are probably making yourself look heavier. A well-cut jacket that is tailored to suit your body shape is going to look amazing. Don’t hide what you dislike about your body but enhance what you do. Refer No.1 A bad fit never looks good regardless the style and or size.

7.

The right denim jean – Stretch denim is a blessing to women. It has comfort and offers style but too much stretch can lead to lumpiness and sagging. When shopping for jeans its best to look for denim with no more than 2% elastane (or spandex/lycra). The right jean will follow your silhouette; have enough stretch so that your legs won’t look as if they are fighting to break free. The more stretch in a jean the more the sag.

8.

Too much skin - Showing too much of anything doesn’t make you look sexy! Furthermore, it’s one of the worst fashion mistakes in my book and pretty much any book out there. Sure, we can turn a blind eye but only if you’re younger than 20 which is generally considered a perfect age to invest in a few tops that reach past your belly button and learn that showing it all doesn’t guarantee you attention..or, at least, not any positive attention. Keep to the rule If you are showing a little flesh up top then cover down bottom and vice versa.

9.

Muffin Madness – We all have had a time where we have a little bit of extra weight around the middle, the “love handles” which when combined with the current low rise jean trend can well frankly be a nightmare. To ignore the fleshy overflow is not a good decision, this takes us back to ill-fitting garments – just don’t do it. The so called “muffin top” will literally butcher your fine physique, making your legs look shorter and your waist chunkier!

10. Stuck in the past – One of the most common mistakes women make with their clothing is clinging to the past. It may be a certain look that they love from their teenage years; it may be due to a job that they continue to wear the same old year on year. It may be a certain trend that they feel makes them look amazing. There are many reasons to being stuck in one specific period however with so many choices and options it is no excuse. Life is all about change so even that one current trend orientated top each year is enough to keep you looking fresh.
