Chelsey gives you tips on finding the right winter coat for you…
A classic winter overcoat that keeps you warm while making a fashion statement should be a staple in every wardrobe; and while it might not yet be time to farewell your jandals and sundresses, soon there will be a distinct chill in the air. But that just gives you the perfect excuse to shop for the perfect coat! As it is likely to be the biggest investment you will make for the colder months, it is important to get your selection right.
Keep it Classic
Though current coat trends include everything from animal prints to puffa jackets, you want to avoid choosing a coat that’s too de jour so that it doesn’t date too fast – especially if this is an investment that you want to be suitable for more than one winter. A safe bet and one of the most popular styles is the belted trench coat. Immortalised by the most stylish women, the classic trench will never go out of fashion, so you can't go wrong adding one of these to your wardrobe.
Neutral is Best - Sometimes
Yes, New Zealand women wear too much black, and there will be a rainbow of colours available in the shops to tempt you; but if you want a versatile hue that will go with everything in your closet, neutral is best. The only exception to this rule is a vibrant red – it will lift any dull ensemble out of the doldrums and be a signature you should be proud to flaunt.
Another important thing to remember when searching for a coat is what style will flatter your shape. It's no good picking up a bubble coat if it accentuates all the wrong bits of your body, just as it'd be a mistake to buy a floor-length wool coat if you're a petite five foot. Belted coats are good for hourglass shapes, A-lines are good for pears, bomber jackets are great for beanpoles and larger women should avoid anything padded or quilted. Don't forget to check all the buttons do up without stretching the button holes, especially if you're big busted; that there is room underneath the coat for layers of clothing without making you look like the Michelin Man, and patterns are kept to a minimum.
There is no point in buying a suede coat if it is always raining where you live; or investing in something that isn’t warm enough or weather proof. Take all of this into consideration as well as how easy that fabric is to care for; if your coat becomes grubby it will look shabby before its time. You're probably going to wear it most days for the next few months, so it's vital to keep it looking good as new for those chilly winter months to come!
