How to make lipliner with lipstick

Evana Patterson has lived and breathed make-up for over ten years. She has travelled and worked as a make-up artist in Hong Kong and Japan and currently resides in Auckland, New Zealand. Evana recently won a nationwide search to be New Zealand’s Max Factor Make-up Artist. When asked what the best thing is about being a make-up artist, Evana says “It’s a job that’s not really a job! Knowing you have made women feel great about themselves is rewarding”.

Some people like to line their lips darker than their lipstick but this look is quite dated and your best bet is to match your lip pencil to your lipstick; You'll make your lips look fuller and give them a cleaner shape.

Start by lining and filling in your lips with a lip pencil. (It will be quite obvious if your lips are asymmetric so you may need to plump up one side by carefully drawling slightly above the edge). This step creates a base colour and makes whatever you apply next last longer. Finish with a matching lipstick, stain or gloss.

If you can’t afford to buy a lip-liner for every shade of lipstick in your makeup bag, simply use a lip flesh-toned pencil under any colour of lipstick (this is also recommended if you don’t have a steady hand for lip-lining in a bright hue!
