I was wondering if this was a fictional or true story. A quick google gave me this review which explained:

This book depicts the lifestyle of Maori in pre-European New Zealand. It’s very readable, but at times seems more like a textbook than a novel. I enjoyed the relating of Maori tikanga/customs, and the use of Te Reo (with a good glossary), but was distracted by having a fictional story planted on solid historical research and felt that the author was trying to do too much. I gather the book is self-published, can understand that it may have been hard to find a commercial publisher, and applaud the author’s determination to make this material public. Definitely a worthwhile read for anyone who is interested in early Maori life.
“This pre-colonisation talegives Maori life in good detail.”

There was also a review on National Radio yesterday (20 July) which anyone interested might like to hear.
