Travel Planning Don'ts

The tip about not leaving all the packing to the last minute is so true - although everyone ends up doing it!

I totally agree with the fact that a bit of research is required. I have to admit that I personally do too much planning when travelling. Sometimes it's fun to just explore a place without necessarily knowing exactly where you're headed next :)

I LOVE planning travel! Haha.
It gets so exciting. I find the hours slip away without me noticing, and if you ever get frustrated you just step back and daydream about the MEAN as time you're about to have.
It's FUN!

Have to admit - - - me and my partner have been planning to go travelling soon and I have been very tempted to do everything your article mentions not to do.

I think spontaneity is something that definitely works for me, spinning around and whacking a pin into the board to determine where you are going is great. Of course once you figure out where you are going you do a bit of research.

I think travelling is more about who you are with and not necessarily where you are going. Being stuck in monsoon weather in Calcutta with my partner was a blast and I wouldn't trade that experience for all the 'donts' someone can come up with. My advice would be to be careful and plan - to an extent.

I could never travel spontaneously to a country. Have way too many places i want to visit and for different reasons which often involves picking the exact right time. Sure if you have won lotto you could be a little more vague but we don't all have that luxury so it makes more sense to pick the destinations that have most captured your imagination

I could never travel spontaneously either. Planning all the way...with enough time left for some flexibility and changes.

Just a heads up - even with months of planning, down to the last detail, things can still go wrong. Such as being caught up in 2 cyclones, while on a Pacific cruise, and missing 4 of 5 ports!! All of my planning went out the door. I'm still not over it. So my worst trip happened, even with the planning : (

I travel quite regularly with my 3 children, and one thing you must NEVER forget to pack when travelling with kids is......an activity pack. In the past activity packs have kept my kids occupied for the majority of the trip. One thing a parent never wants to hear for the entire trip is "how much longer, are we there yet?". Another must have is a pack of baby wipes. Regardless of how careful your kids are, they are bound to spill drink all over themselves. If your lucky to have a portable dvd player, dont forget to pack this, but always remember to charge the battery before you board the plane.
