Real friends - What are they?

I read this quote recently and wondered how others felt about the feelings expressed:

"“In your entire life, you can probably count your true friends on one hand. Maybe even on one finger. Those are the friends you need to cherish, and I wouldn't trade one of them for a hundred of the other kind. I'd rather be completely alone than with a bunch of people who aren't real. People who are just passing time.”

i think its pretty true... i have like 3 or 4 true great friends that i know i will have for life... and my life would deff be changed if they werent there... others come and go... but no matter what comes between you.. they are still there... i have one whom we havnt lived in the same country for about 5 years..,. but she is still my closest friend... we talk every single day...

Real friends are family you just aren't related to. The are unconditional, supportive, loving and know you better than you know yourself a lot of the time. I am so greatful for my friends!

I've never been able to understand people that 'collect' friends and seem to have masses of new people around them all the time. I would rather have 4 good friends I would trust with my life than 25 people who only just know me

I possibly have more real friends than most because I seem to get a couple in every city I live in for more than a year, but that being said, I don't really have even one in the city I'm in at the moment. I did, but people tend to move away from Hamilton. Not surprising really is it...

I hear you. We move around too, and after having made great friends in the little South Island town we were in for a couple of years, it's back to being friendless in Hamilton.(where I've lived for probably 12 years)

I'm still here hun!

I think real friends are the ones that always welcome you back into their lives no matter how long you have been apart.

Real friends laugh with you, cry with you, are there for good and bad times. They tell you the honest truth, even if you don't want to hear it. They shared their clothes, make up, help out when your broke and come pick up and bring wine. They forgive and love you just like a sister.

Real friends stand the test of time - unlike most marriages. They are there for the good and the bad times and are your reality check outside of the dynamic of family.

I suppose they ARE family. No matter how long between contact, you pick up instantly as there is such a lot of history. I find as I get older that there are still new friends out there...but often your friendship is shorter and more intense because time is shorter. I lost 3 new old friends last year. But we had good times together.

Real friends are people who are constant in your life. No matter what happens they are the ones that are there for you. They may not understand every decision you make but they still stand by you. They may be hurt by the mistakes you make but they still choose to forgive you. Real friends believe in you even when you don't believe in yourself. They love you no matter what.
