Bring a plate...

It's Christmas party and BBQ time. What do you usually take when you are asked to bring a plate? Do you prefer the host to specify what sort of dish - salad, bread, tart, pie, dessert... or are you happiest just to take a big bag of crisps?

I always ask the host if there is anything in particular they'd like me to bring.
Usually homemade garlic bread is a hit as I add finely chopped parsley and extra garlic to the butter.
If taking a dessert I make ambrosia.
I also take a couple of extra bottles of fizzy or juice as people who don't drink alcohol (byo) don't usually bring a drink expecting the host to supply it.
