BDO Artist Profile
Big Day Out is celebrating its 20th year as New Zealand and Australia’s premier musical festival. In the months leading up to the event, Chelsey will profile various artists from the 2012 lineup – making sure you know who to catch in January.
Who the f*@k are they: After bursting into the public consciousness with the release of "If You Wanna," The Vaccines placed third on BBC's 'Sound Of 2011' poll. One week later they appeared on the cover of NME Magazine; all this without the release of an album. Heralded as the return of good old fashioned pop music, The Vaccines released their debut record, What Did You Expect From The Vaccines?, through Columbia Records. The album was met with positive reviews, and the band began an extensive touring schedule that saw them supporting The Arctic Monkeys, Crystal Castles and The Horrors. What Did You Expect From The Vaccines? broke though into the top 5 of the UK Album Chart before going on to become 2011’s best selling debut record. The Vaccines signal a new era of guitar-based pop. No band since The Strokes have garnered such acclaim.

Key releases: 2011’s What Did You Expect From The Vaccines? Their sophomore album is supposedly in the works…
Sounds like: The Strokes in their heyday, which of course means a sound similar to The Ramones, The Clash with a postmodern hint of The Jesus and Mary Chain. The band describes their sound as “50s rock 'n' roll, '60s garage and girl groups, '70s punk and '80s American hardcore.” It’s a sound that spans the decades…
Why you should check them out: At the beginning of 2011 there was no hotter band than The Vaccines, while the buzz surrounding the band has died down considerably, they are still very much in demand. Listening to The Vaccines is like taking a trip back, to a time when music was innocent and unabashedly fun. This is sound that demands to be heard live: jangly guitars and sing-along melodies – party like it’s 1955…
