10 Questions with Cam Mansel

Cam Mansel is the host of the new radio show ZM Snapchart, the world’s first interactive music chart based entirely on listeners' snaps. We catch up with him about strange habits, snapchat filters and what song he has on repeat right now.

1.      You’re hosting the brand new ZM Snapchart show – how cool! How is this different to other shows?

Snapchart is different to other shows because Snapchat is out main way we communicate with our listeners. It is the first countdown that is decided by Snapchat. People send in votes for their favourite songs, we count them and that decides what the number one is going to be for the night.

2.      What’s your favourite snapchat filter?

The llama. There’s the dog and the bunny filters but they’re a bit predictable. Who saw the llama coming? Not me. It’s so good!

3.      Who is the first artist you ever saw in concert?

The first concert I ever went to was The Rolling Stones at Western Springs. The thing that stands out the most was the fact that Nickleback were the opening act. The crowd didn’t really like that, everyone was chanting “Nickle What? Nickle Who?”. When the stones came on I remember sitting there looking at the lights, not believing it was real life.

4.      What is your strangest habit that listeners might not know about?

I’m a pretty strange person in general and I don’t really hide anything, so chances are if I have a strange habit people already know about it!

5.      Water or Snow skiing?

The choice between water and snow skiing is so hard. I love them both but if I had to choose I would say snow skiing. Water skiing you are restricted to wherever the boat is going, but snow skiing you’ve got the opportunity to go wherever on the mountain. I also like the social aspect where you meet new people on the chairlift. I also like the mystery of not ever knowing who you’re sitting next to on a chair lift. When I’m skiing in New Zealand I’m always like, “is that Lorde behind those goggles?”.

6.      What song can you not get enough of right now?

The song I have on repeat at the moment is Paris by The Chainsmokers. It still baffles me that they are the dudes behind the song Selfie but I LOVE their new stuff. Closer ft. Halsey was my favorite song of 2016 and I know it’s early days but Paris is already a favorite of this year!

7.      What do you think is the most underrated quality of Kiwis?

I think the most underrated quality of Kiwis is the Kiwi modesty. You meet some of the most successful people in their field and they just play it down like it’s no big deal.

8.      Even though you’re new to this show, you’ve been on the airwaves for a while. Have you ever had any live interviews take a disastrous turn?

Hahaha this is good. I have had a couple of disastrous interviews but to quote Kelly Clarkson, “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”. The thing I have noticed is it’s usually the smaller bands/artists that have the biggest egos. I once had a band coming in to do a live performance and one of the members of the band wouldn’t carry his guitar.

9.      What was the last tv show you accidentally-on-purpose ended up binge watching?

The last show I wanted to binge watch was an attempt and fail… I really wanted to get into ‘Haters Back Off’, the Netflix show by Miranda Sings… It was awful. I didn’t even make it through the first episode. I was gutted because I love her movies. I’m always down to binge watch some Jessica Jones.

10.  What are you most looking forward to in 2017?

I am most looking forward to seeing Adele perform live in 2017. I have wanted her to come to New Zealand ever since she released her first album. The fact that she is finally coming is SO GOOD! Her show will be amazing! I love her honesty, what you see is what you get.
