JJ from Chelsey had a phone call from Nikki Deloach, who plays Lacey Hamilton on MTV’s Awkward. Season two is on MTV, at 8.30 on Wednesdays.
Thanks so much for speaking to me all the way in New Zealand! Where are you calling from?
New Zealand! New Zealand is on my top ten places in the world to go! I’m in LA at the moment, and it’s a boiler room.
You play Lacey Hamilton, Jenna’s mother in MTV’s Awkward. Can you tell us about the role and the show?
Awkward chronicles the life of Jenna Hamilton, through the challenges and ups and downs of high school. The great thing about the show is that it goes outside of school, showing that life is really just an extension of high school.
As a character, Lacey is a well intentioned, but over bearing mother. She’s going into Season two with a lot of atoning to do so the season is all about redemption. It will show what Lacey was like in high school, and as Jenna discovers her mother in a whole new way, so will the audience. They’ll find out she’s not such a bad mother – she just lost herself along the way.
How did you get cast in the role?
I got an audition through my agent. I thought the show was genius – with such a different voice. I understood Lacey in a different way than most, I think. Not as a bitchy mother, but as really lost and a person who had given up a lot for her daughter.
The show follows Jenna’s life in high school. What was high school like for you?
High school was a little different for me because I worked in acting [in the Mickey Mouse Club], so a lot of high school was being on set. There were still the cliques and the dynamics were the same as high school though. I still felt awkward!
Jenna has a bit of a love triangle going on in her life. Are you Team Matty or Team Jake?
For the longest time I didn’t say because I wasn’t sure! They are both such good guys. What I think it is about is what does your heart say. For Lacey it’s whatever Jenna chooses, and I agree with that. By the end of the season Jenna does make a choice so it will be interesting to see what New Zealand thinks!
Why do you think the show has been such a success?
The writing, hands down. Lauren has crafted a show that’s very authentic. It’s a comedy but there’s drama and she writes what she knows and writes from the heart. Authenticity is everything. She brings the funny out of awkward situations and isn’t afraid to bring the drama and tears. Lauren once said that the show is a love letter to her fifteen year old self.
Who’s the most memorable person you’ve ever worked with?
The principle of the Micky Mouse Club while I was there was one of the most influential people of my life. He changed my life in so many ways – he introduced me to Shakespeare and the beauty of it. He got me interested in characterisation – what characters do what they do.
If you could get a role in any current TV show (other than Awkward) what would it be?
Breaking Bad and Homeland are both so genius. They are my favourite two shows. I would love to pick up trash on either of those shows.
