Tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do:
My mission is to educate and inspire, enhancing people’s health and happiness, igniting a ripple effect that transforms the world. I went to university for 14 years and studied nutrition and dietetics and then went on and did a PhD in biochemistry. I’ve also worked one-on-one with people for 15 years helping them achieve the health outcomes they seek. Today I spend most of my time travelling the world as a keynote speaker at health conventions and workshops. I have also written four books, Accidentally Overweight, Rushing Woman’s Syndrome and The Real Food Chef, and my most recent release, Beauty From The Inside Out.
Why did you decide to write a book about beauty?
Health is my passion but I realize it isn’t for everyone. Yet without our health we have nothing and I don’t want it to take a health crisis to wake people up to that. But most people want to look good. So I felt if I shared the biochemical, nutritional and emotional factors that contribute to or take away from beauty, more people would take better care of themselves. And discover outstanding health in the process!
Tell us what Beauty From The Inside Out is all about:
Beauty really is an inside job. Our outer layer is merely a reflection of our inner processes, which are completely reliant on the health of the 50 trillion cells that make up ‘you’. The health of those cells is impacted by everything from the food you eat, the nutrients present or missing from your blood, and the hormones and messages your body makes based on whether your thoughts are fearful or loving.
Throughout the book I will guide you on which levers to pull to help you create, recognize, and deeply appreciate your beautiful shine. We explore your outer world — the food you choose, the nutrients you ingest, hydration, posture, movement, skin, hair and nails — and delve into your inner world of sex hormones, stress hormones, detox, digestion, elimination pathways, thyroid and pituitary functions, and how both worlds relate to your sparkle. This is not a book teaching you how to cleanse, tone and moisturise.
Instead, I explain what your body needs to create lovely nails, lustrous hair, sparkling eyes, and clear, luminous skin, and you will also be guided to deal with very specific bumps in the road, such as dark circles under the eyes, eczema, pimples, and hair that is falling out, just to name a few. Just as importantly, we take a heart-opening look at your emotional landscape because, for many, that is where the real elixir is.
What is the best beauty advice you have ever been given?
Beauty sleep is a real thing! It really does restore and repair all out ‘beauty bits’ And an hour of sleep before midnight is worth two after! Another great piece of beauty advice is to keep your hands away from your face or use ‘fairy fingers’ when touching the skin on your face. The skin on our face, particularly around our eyes is very delicate so we must remember to treat it gently.
What's your approach to balance & moderation?
I lead a very busy lifestyle so it is important to me that I take time out for myself every day. Whether that be some restorative yoga poses before bed or a half hour for myself having cup of tea and reading a magazine, it is so important to have that sacred time out to just ‘be’ with yourself. I also fill my body with incredibly nutritious food and make sure I get plenty of sleep, and that generally sets me up for a very balanced headspace.
