Book Review: Beyond Happiness: The 12 Principles of Enduring Bliss

Beyond Happiness: The 12 Principles of Enduring Happiness

By Marnie McDermott

Happiness. For many of us it is that elusive thing we keep searching for. But, what is it, how do you know when you’ve found it, and how do you keep it? From internationally acclaimed, New Zealand author, Marnie McDermott, comes Beyond Happiness: The 12 Principles of Enduring Bliss. It aims to answer these questions, and to help you on your search for bliss.

Beyond Happiness takes readers on a journey, the destination: bliss, love, and joy. This book explores the concept of happiness, and what might be limiting yours, but above all, this book is about inviting happiness into your life. McDermott’s “12 principles of happiness”, are something of a step-by-step programme to facilitate readers in their search for harmony and happiness.

Divided into four parts, “Mind”, “Body”, “Emotion”, and “Spirit”, the whole self is attended to. There is advice on everything from creating order in your life, to rejuvenating your energy, from freeing yourself from the shackles of hurt, to being true to yourself. Each principle comes kitted with reflections, and simple, bite-sized practices that you can add to your life.

Beyond Happiness successfully inspired me into action. This book is beautifully written, and beautifully presented, and as I was reading it, I could feel the care, love, and tenderness that went into its production. As I turned the pages, I felt I was having a heart-to-heart with a dear friend, one who was gently advising me towards a better, more satisfying life.

What I particularly enjoyed about Beyond Happiness was its division into small chunks. The chapters are not too overwhelming, so I could read a section, and then put the book to the side to reflect (and implement) what I had read. Even within each chapter, there are many subsections, making it possible to take in as much or as little as you feel you need from a particular sitting. I also thought the “simple bliss practices” at the end of each chapter were incredibly practical, and small enough to fit into life, one at a time, without much effort – ideal for lasting change.

This is a spiritual guidebook book that is accessible to everyone, and it will change the way you think about your life. I recommend this book to anyone who feels stuck in a rut, who wants more from life, who is on some kind of a soul journey, or who enjoys an inspirational read. I will definitely be looking out for McDermott’s next book, Soul Happiness!

About the Author:

No stranger to the search for happiness, up until a few years ago, McDermott was caught in her own “happiness trap”, desperately trying to find happiness by accumulating more and more things. A devastating house fire was the first step towards a simpler, happier life. After many years of work in the government, health, and not-for-profit sectors, Marnie is now a professional life coach, Reiki master teacher, and chartered energy Kinesiologist.
