Author of 11 cookbooks, popular TV and radio cook, and former food editor for both NZ House and Garden and NZ Women's Weekly, the effervescent Annabelle White combines great energy in the kitchen with simple tips, easy and achievable recipes, and plenty of fun.
At this year’s Food Shows in Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland, Annabelle is going to be doing live cooking demonstrations to show off some of her culinary genius. Her classes are full of humour, highly interactive and her message is clear - the less you do to great produce and ingredients the better.

When did you decide that cooking was something you wanted to pursue?
It’s very simple, if you love good food, it makes sense to learn how to cook and share this with others.
Do you have a food philosophy?
Keep things incredibly simple and spend more time searching out great ingredients than hours in the kitchen working with spun sugar and timbales and mousseline
What’s your go-to breakfast?
Easy Vogel’s toast with a free range poached egg.
What’s your most memorable meal from childhood?
My Mother’s roast dinners – just walking into the house and the aroma always kicked in and the simple delight of a roast dinner!
If you could eat cuisine from any other cook in the world, who would it be?
I love Bill Granger’s food but the best food I have ever eaten was prepared by top chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten – he’s like the Pope in the cooking world! I told him that and he just laughed and gave me more food!
What’s one thing you will not eat?
Donkey and insects – I was given braised donkey in Northern Italy and I just couldn’t go there!
What would you cook if the Queen was coming for tea?
My buttermilk scones – easy they are the best!
What are you looking forward to about being at The Food Shows?
The Food Shows are magic as good food is all about good times and sometimes this is forgotten and with the terrific audiences we have so much laughter and joy as well as cooking tips – it’s so much fun!
What will you be doing there?
I’m showing all my favourite baking recipes from my radio shows, where people ring in their prized recipe, then I go home and test it and then share with everyone – I feel like it’s a community service!
What can you make in less than 10 minutes?
I can make my buttermilk scones in less than 10 minutes if you don’t include baking time.
If people feel overwhelmed by cooking, where should they start?
Start by trying to do just one dish – so if they are having company over do a salad and a main course and buy the bits and pieces for the nibbles and the dessert – even ice cream can be a perfectly fine dessert option.
Keep it simple – if you can do a spag bol then just do that and add more fresh basil if it’s you mother–in-law. Forget performance anxiety, you will not be judged and you are not on Master Chef – relax and never apologise – if something doesn’t work out rename it!
What food trend do you foresee coming about in 2017?
Juices will get bigger and more raw food /healthy options
What’s your favourite guilty pleasure food?
My mother’s home made apple pie – I know I should be going for a major hike after feasting on a raw apple, but somehow that luscious combination of home made pastry and perfectly cooked apples just says love and home.
